Our Tech Innovations class is currently building a two-frequency dome of approximately 13 feet in diameter.  The dome is to be constructed on the east side of the school building and will be used to test insulation techniques.  The dome is to be built out of 45 ripped 2x6's, 20' of flashing, a 10' 3"-diameter PVC pipe, and 2" drywall screws.

our woodpile, all nice and neat before construction begins

In order to accomplish this task, the class split up into four groups, which then rotated between four work stations.  The following log documents the work done by our group over the four days.

Day 1  (11/14/03)

Chris G. and Becca measuring                     chopsaw! (or miter saw, fine)                 cut....

After another group ripped the 2x6's, we took the resulting 2x3's and cut a 16° angle off of one end using the compound miter saw.  We then measured 46.5" from the outside point, and cut another 16° angle off the resulting end, so that both points on the 2x3 tapered inward.

Day 2  (11/14/03)

Becca and Emily measured three 16" sections from the roll of flashing, which were then cut up by Chris, Chris and Daniel on the             .

Becca and Emily then measured six ≈1" strips out of these sections, making 16"x1" pieces of flashing.  The entire group participated in these last cuts.

Day 3  (11/18/03)

Today our group cut the PVC pipe into 3" sections using the manual miter saw, with each person taking a turn of holding or cutting.  We then sanded the edges of the pipe sections, which were rough-hewn from the saw blade.

We finished with time to spare, so for the remainder of the period we worked on attaching pieces of flashing to the tapered 2x3's using two screws.  The flashing was then looped through the PVC pipe and attached to the opposite side of the wood.

Day 4 (11/19/03)

Using the table saw, we ripped 2x6's into 2x3's.  Three people caught  - two on the receiving end, one on the pushing end - while another person fed the wood into the saw.

And then you're done!
